Course Information:

MUSIC-1354 Piano Course Information (College of DuPage Catalog Description):  Private instrumental or vocal instruction to develop musical skills primarily for personal enrichment. Concurrent enrollment in one of the College's instrumental or vocal groups is recommended. May be taken 4 times for credit.

MUSIC-1454 Piano Course Information (College of DuPage Catalog Description): Private instrumental instruction for students planning to continue music studies at a baccalaureate-granting institution. Concurrent enrollment in one of the College’s instrumental or vocal groups is recommended. May be taken 4 times for credit. Pre-Enrollment Criteria: Faculty assessment recommended to determine if student has technical skills necessary for baccalaureate study.

Registration and Tuition: Applied lesson costs are incorporated into the college tuition as an additional lab fee. Students MUST be registered by the beginning of each term. See the attached information for registration codes and other pertinent information. See additional instructions further down.

Course Content: The goals of private piano study are concentrated in three general areas: technique, keyboard theory and repertoire. Specific assignments are made according to the instructor’s discretion and in accordance with the department curriculum outline.

Evaluation: Students enrolled in MUSIC-1354 (one-credit study) opting to study piano privately as a secondary instrument will receive a semester grade based on preparation and improvement. Students enrolled in MUSIC-1454 (two-credit study), are generally students for whom piano is a major or principal instrument. These students take part in a formal jury exam before the piano faculty at the conclusion of each semester of study. The combined jury exam grade will be combined with weekly lesson grades to determine the course grade for the semester.

How to Register for Credit Applied Music Study:

Students can register three ways: in person, by phone, or online:

(please note that students enrolling for more than 4 semesters will need to register in person)

1) In person registration – Come to the Student Services Center (SSC) at College of DuPage during regular business hours (M-F) and find the Registration Office located in room 2221. This is the best way to set up a payment plan directly with the cashier’s office.

2) Phone registration – Call 630-942-2377 to register with operator assistance.

3) Online registration – Go to www.cod.edu and click under “my access.” Then select “search for credit classes.” You will either have a personal account set up from previous semesters, or you will be directed to create an account.

College of DuPage Official Policies:

Withdrawals: The final day for a student to withdraw will be equal to 75% of the academic session. The dates for all sessions (8-week, 12-week, 16-week) are included on the COD site. Go to http://www.cod.edu/academics/pdf/fy12cal.pdf. A student may drop any course for any reason up to the last day to officially withdraw, and will receive a grade of W on their transcript. After the 75% point, no withdrawals will be allowed except for special cases such as health or family emergencies, call to active duty, or sudden, verified illness. These students are required to provide to the Registration Office appropriate documentation for all requests for late withdrawal. Students who drop after the 75% point without an approved Petition for Withdrawal from the Registration Office will receive a grade of F if they have not made special arrangements with the faculty to receive an Incomplete (I) grade. Students will not be eligible to petition for late withdrawal after the designated final examination time in 16- and 12- week classes, or after the last class meeting in 10-week, 8-week, or 5-week classes. Prior to withdrawing, students are encouraged to speak with the instructor.
